Most conversations about canine health start at the vet’s office, after something has already gone wrong. But some of the most important signals about a dog’s long-term health show up long before a diagnosis, in the everyday rhythms of daily life. This includes: how much they move, how well they rest, how their activity changes week to week.
This is the idea behind preventative health for dogs, and it’s why exercise and lifestyle deserve their own spotlight in this series.
Why Exercise Is a Health Metric, Not Just a Habit
We tend to think of exercise as a behavioral or training issue: is the dog getting walked enough, is there a yard to run in, does the breed need more stimulation. But activity level is also one of the clearest early indicators of physical and metabolic health.
The scale of this problem is bigger than most owners realize: an estimated 59% of dogs in North America are classified as overweight or obese (VCA Animal Hospitals). That means for the majority of dogs, exercise and lifestyle tracking isn’t a nice-to-have, it’s addressing the single most common preventable health issue in the species.
The Lifestyle Gap in Traditional Vet Care
A once- or twice-a-year wellness visit gives a vet a single snapshot of a dog’s condition. It doesn’t show:
- How activity trends over weeks or seasons
- Whether rest patterns are changing
- How a dog’s day-to-day movement compares to dogs of similar breed, age, and size
- Whether a new medication, injury, or diet change is actually affecting behavior at home
This is the gap wearables are starting to fill, not by replacing veterinary care, but by giving it context.
What Dog Wearables Actually Measure
Modern dog wearables have moved well past step counting. Depending on the device, they can track:
- Activity duration and intensity — differentiating a leisurely sniff-walk from a full sprint
- Rest and sleep quality — including restlessness, which can correlate with pain or anxiety
- Scratching and licking behavior — often an early flag for skin conditions or allergies
- Location and range — useful for both safety and understanding how much space a dog is actually using
- Long-term trend data — the real value, since a single data point matters far less than a pattern over time
Individually, each of these is a nice-to-have. Together, and tracked consistently, they start to build a behavioral baseline for a dog, one that makes it possible to notice deviations early, before they become visible to the naked eye.

Where Wearables and Body Condition Data Intersect
Activity data becomes even more useful when it’s paired with an accurate picture of a dog’s physical condition. A wearable might show that a dog’s activity has dropped 20% over two months. But is that because of pain, weight gain, seasonal heat, or something behavioral?
This is where objective body condition data adds the missing piece. Combining activity trends with visual, computer-vision-based body condition scoring gives a much fuller picture than either data source alone: not just how much a dog is moving, but whether their body composition is shifting in a way that explains, or contradicts, the activity pattern.
For veterinarians, insurers, and pet health platforms, this kind of layered data is what turns “the dog seems different lately” into something measurable and actionable.
What This Means for Preventative Care
The promise of wearables isn’t that they diagnose anything, they don’t, and they shouldn’t try to. What they do is shrink the gap between “something changed” and “someone noticed.” For owners, that means catching subtle shifts before they become urgent. For vets, it means walk-in visits backed by weeks or months of real behavioral data instead of a single anxious owner’s memory of “he’s just been off lately.”
As this category matures, the dogs who benefit most will be the ones whose everyday lives are being quietly, continuously observed — not through more vet visits, but through smarter data woven into the life they’re already living.
